The September 17 pickup party at the winery was a pleasant way to spend a drizzly Sunday afternoon. Driving to the winery through the vineyards heavy with grapes certainly raised expectations for the coming harvest and the wines to come.
The surprise hit of the party was the 2013 Holloran Riesling Eola Amity Hills. Striking that marvelous balance between sweet and dry, this beautiful white wine was quite a way to start the tasting. Next in line was a fresh 2014 Holloran Chardonnay and a flight of three different Holloran La Chenaie Pinot Noirs (2010, 2008, and 2009), showing how the same grape can produce wonderfully different flavor profiles. A 2015 Holloran Tempranillo finished off the tasting. If you haven't tried the tempranillo, you should.
Food pairings included chevre with herbs and honey, flatbread with roasted summer vegetables and gruyere, shitake croquettes, duck confit beignet with cherry and Dijon sauce, pork belly filled dates, and stuffed mini peppers with herbed goat cheese.
The next pickup party will be in November.
